Newburyport, MA – One Missing, Four Injured in Explosion at PCI Synthesis Chemical Plant

Newburyport, MA (May 4, 2023) – A major explosion was reported early Thursday morning in the Newburyport area.

At around 1:00 a.m. on May 4, the police and firefighters responded to the scene of an explosion that took place at the PCI Synthesis chemical plant.

Reports show that multiple reports of explosions came in during the early morning hours. Investigations found that the explosion caused an industrial-sized VAT from inside of the building to relocate approximately 30 feet as a result of the explosion at the plant, which is located on Opportunity Way.

One person is missing following the explosion. Four other workers were injured. Medics responded to the scene to provide care to the victims before transporting them to area hospitals.

Reports indicate that two other incidents recently occurred at the plant. In 2020, an explosion was reported at the same facility, and in 2021, emergency officials reportedly responded to a chemical fire.

At this time, investigations are underway to determine the cause of this incident.
