Newburyport, MA (May 4, 2023) – A major explosion was reported early Thursday morning in the Newburyport area.
At around 1:00 a.m. on May 4, the police and firefighters responded to the scene of an explosion that took place at the PCI Synthesis chemical plant.
Reports show that multiple reports of explosions came in during the early morning hours. Investigations found that the explosion caused an industrial-sized VAT from inside of the building to relocate approximately 30 feet as a result of the explosion at the plant, which is located on Opportunity Way.
One person is missing following the explosion. Four other workers were injured. Medics responded to the scene to provide care to the victims before transporting them to area hospitals.
Reports indicate that two other incidents recently occurred at the plant. In 2020, an explosion was reported at the same facility, and in 2021, emergency officials reportedly responded to a chemical fire.
At this time, investigations are underway to determine the cause of this incident.
We hope the injured victims are able to recover quickly.
Explosions in the United States
Explosions can be incredibly devastating, resulting in the loss of life, severe injuries, and extensive property damage. Unfortunately, countless people are affected by these incidents every year. In the United States, hundreds of explosions are reported on an annual basis.
Many of the explosions that take place in our country are a result of some form of negligence. Whether chemicals are being improperly stored, workers are not trained properly to operate the equipment, or safety measures are not in place, any act of negligence can have a devastating impact on the lives of those around.
During large explosions, people are likely to suffer from serious injuries that affect their lives forever. We see many people left with burn injuries, crushing injuries, and even severe lacerations. Depending on the chemicals involved in the explosion, victims may suffer internal injuries to their lungs and respiratory systems. Unfortunately, the impact of an explosion can be long-lasting. Not only do many victims have to go through emergency treatment, but some require extensive medical care, which can last for several months or even years.
