Explosion Incidents in Maryland
Steam pipe explosions can be incredibly devastating. Unfortunately, they often take place for a variety of reasons. In many cases, these incidents take place as a result of people who are negligent in the maintenance of the pipes. The operating conditions, as well as the age and overall condition of the steam pipe, can also contribute to an explosion occurring.
In general, there are several factors that contribute to these incidents more often than others. These include:
- External damage: when there is any damage to the steam pipe, such as the pipe being struck during excavation work, construction activities, or due to natural disaster, it can cause a weakening in the pipe that can lead to an explosion.
- Material defects: Substandard materials, manufacturer defects, were even improper installation can compromise the entire integrity of the steam pipe. This can increase the likelihood of a failure or an explosion.
- Poor maintenance: When the pipes are not routinely inspected, or a person fails to identify or repair any leaks within the pipe, it can lead to an explosion. There are also instances where people improperly repair damaged pipes, which causes the pipes to explode.
- High pressure: when excessive pressure builds up within the steam pipe, it can lead to a devastating explosion. This often is a result of malfunctioning equipment or improper pressure regulation.
