Manhattan, NY (July 13, 2023) – Two people were injured as a result of an explosion that occurred in the Midtown area on Wednesday, July 12.

At around 6:30 a.m., an acetylene tank located on the 34th floor of 550 Madison Avenue exploded. The incident prompted the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department to shut down the area while working to remove debris.

Further investigations show that a crew of construction workers were at the facility during the morning hours. As one worker utilized a Sawzall to open a box, sparks from the blade caused the explosion.

Two workers were injured as a result of the explosion. One victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital for emergency care. The second victim was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center. A third worker was treated at the scene but refused transportation.

The New York Police Department is currently investigating the incident.
