New Town, SD (July 21, 2023) – An explosion was reported in the New Town area that left several people injured, according to local law enforcement.
At around 11:00 a.m. on July 18, emergency officials were called to the site of an incident near Highway 23. Reports from officials indicate that an oil tank explosion occurred on Highway 23 just north of the New Town Bypass. The incident then caused a major fire to erupt in the area. Officials worked hard to remove residents from nearby apartment complexes when a second explosion occurred.
A total of four people were injured as a result of the explosions. EMS rendered aid to the victims on-site. Two ambulances were called to transport two of the victims. One victim was airlifted and flown to Trinity Hospital in Minot for emergency treatment of serious injuries.
At this time, the cause of the explosion is being investigated.
